Road deicing salt

Road deicing salt

Conventional road deicing  salt (= sodium chloride) used deicing agent. There are three types of salt:

Vacuum salt is fine road salt that is greatly harmful to the environment because of the extraction process involved. Unless this type of salt gritted in combination with brine, it will quickly evaporate as it is particularly fine and dry.

The extraction of sea salt on the other hand is Eco-friendly. Its grains are coarser, giving the salt a longer lasting effect.
Excavated from Iran salt mines and crushed into granular shapes without powdered salt content, proper for heavy snow and salt trucks.

The words ‘grit’ or ‘gritting’ are sometimes used as synonymous with ‘salt’ or ‘salting’. In practice, it is salt which is almost always used. The use of stones or chippings is not recommended for use in de-icing roads as this leads to an increase in windscreen damage claims

Environmental Issues:

  • Road deicing salt has a low environmental impact when used responsibly.
  • Effective planning can also help by designing roads .

So effects of salt on vegetation are varied, largely dependent on species. Chlorides can contribute to metal corrosion. Modern vehicle design and consideration of the de-icing activity in designing and building road structures have both helped to reduce the impact of corrosion.  The general objective should be: As much as necessary, as little as possible.
